How to
Recruit a Dynamic Fundraising Board
Presenter: Chuck Loring,
BoardSource
Does
your board do good fundraising? Were
they recruited with fundraising as
an expectation? Do you have the
right board members for effective
fundraising? Do you need a new
board?
This workshop will focus on the
realities of today's nonprofit
fundraising and why the right board
is an important part of the
successful fundraising team.
You will analyze your current board
to determine if it is the right
board. Ideas will be shared on how
to gracefully "retire" some board
members and how to recruit the type
of board members you actually need.
You will learn why you should
abolish your Nominations Committee
and replace it with a Governance
Committee.
Other issues to be covered:
Why great boards profile
Why your board Expectation
Statement is critical for
recruitment
Why term limits are essential for
a fundraising board
Why some nonprofits confuse
volunteering with governance
Why board orientation and
education are critical for success

Getting the Right Board to Do Great
Fundraising
Presenter: Chuck Loring,
BoardSource
This
workshop will pick up where the
morning workshop ends. We will start
with the assumption you have
assembled a great board or that you
now know how to assemble a great
board.
You will participate in a sample
board fundraising training. At the
end of this training you will learn
how every willing board member can
be a great fundraiser. Board members
will understand that fundraising is
not about asking for money, its
really about building relationships.
You will see that board members who
are afraid to solicit can be
empowered to be great fundraisers.
You will learn:
The role of stewardship in board
fundraising
How board members can help with
planned giving
Periodic fundraising exercises you
can do with your board
How to get your board to
articulate your value to the
community

Salons 6 & 7 Development 101:
Building the Development Capacity of
Your Schools
Presenters: Cynthia Talbot-Holz
and Michael Williams, Salt Lake
Education Foundation (UT)
This
past summer Salt Lake Education
Foundation hosted a two-day training
for "school development teams" (i.e., principals, teachers, staff,
PTA/Os, alumni associations, etc.)
and presented basic, yet state of
the art development tools and
strategies for schools to use in
partnership with the district
foundation. The results, just 4
months later, have been remarkable.
This session will share with
participants ways to raise the
development and community awareness
raising capacity of local schools as
they seek external resources to
support programs. The text developed
for the training included the most
current literature and data from 3rd
sector authors and fundraisers and
delves into everything from special
events, annual campaigns, planned
giving, grant seeking, donor
relations, etc.
Outcomes from the session will
include how to design similar
trainings, resources, and follow up
techniques used by SLEF in this
successful project.

-
Salon 4 Compelling Case, Committed Crew, and
Collaborative
Connections - The Plan Within Your
Strategic Plan
Presenter: Gaye Leonard,
Cherry Creek Schools Foundation (CO)
Successful K-12 Foundations have one
thing in common. Everyone is on
board and rowing in the same
direction. A well-oiled "crew" -
like a team of rowers gliding
through smooth water.
We focus a lot on the challenges of
FUNDRAISING and community support.
The true key to success for school
foundations seems to rest in the
alignment of the school board,
district administration, foundation
board members, staff, donors, and
last but never least, the students
we serve. School foundation
management takes "herding cats" to
new heights but it is well worth it.
Whether your goals are modest or
monstrous, a strategic plan within
your plan will ensure that you have
the right crew rowing in the same
direction toward success and smooth
sailing!
